We would like to invite you on a bus ride to food, shopping and gaming to support our OC-2 fundraiser. It will be a fun social event, lets invite all your friends and families.

Meet at Whitney High School or TBD @ 8:00 am to board the bus.

Coffee, donuts, snacks & water will be provided along with games, raffles and entertainment in the bus.
Price: $30 per person or $50 for 2 people. Includes Casino Fun Book which is good for 50% off at the Viejas Buffet or 50% off an entrée at the Café, The Grove Steakhouse, Far East Express or North of the Boarder. It also includes Outlet Discount booklet.

Viejas Casino Card 1st Timers get a $10 free play after a $10 casino play.

We need a minimum of 35 people to make this event happen.

Yard $ale!

[Editors note: better late than never!  This is posted on behalf of Raja] 

I don't think anyone will be surprised to learn that shenanigans occurred during the Space Dragons Yard Sale.  But we'll get to that in a moment.

First, the big news everyone - approximately $700 was raised over the course of one day.  Big thanks to all of the help the team received - Roger for organizing, James N. for hosting, Denise for running the finances, everyone who pitched in, brought out equipment and their donated goods.  Of course we must thank the early birds who got up before the glorious butt-crack of dawn, got down to Torrance to help set up, the many who showed up throughout the day to drop things off, help sell, hang out and finally pack and clean things up at the end of the day.  We seriously could not have done all of this without everyone's help!

Among the random items sold: one spare tire, one old air window-mounted air conditioning unit and these critters:

But what of the shenanigans, you ask?  Other than the normal goofing off, racing office chairs down the street, and other child-like antics we've all become accustomed to, we also had... well, I'm not sure how to put this into words. LB Dragon Boat Community Fundraiser @ Wahoo's

LB Paddlers & Friends -

We are very excited to announce that our nearby Wahoo's has agreed to host a fundraiser for our Long Beach Dragon Boat community THIS SUNDAY (9/20/09)!!

It's really simple to participate and help our community:

1) Print out a copy of the flyer below
2) Go to Wahoos (6449 E. PCH, next to CPK) on 9/20/09
3) Present the flyer when placing your order - that's it!

Wahoo's will then issue a check for 20% of all purchases to our Dragon Boat community!

Friends and Family Day was YAY!

Thanks to all the friends and family that came out to join us on Friends and Family day this past Sunday. With a large showing of newbies, we had 31 new waivers and were able to take out 4 full boats equating to a total of 60 paddlers!!!

Joe says, "NO! We can't fit anymore!"

Friends and Family Day all started with John’s passionate explanation on the history of dragon boating.

With Em’s interactive tutorial lesson on paddling form and vets’ guidance, it was one close race on the water between the four boats.

Everyone did a wonderful job of picking up the sport in the span of an hour. We hope you come back to paddle, but if not, we appreciate your support from the cheering section ;)

Aside from the fun on the water, there were also plenty of activities off the water (Devant’s tightrope walking, frisbee, football...), and also some water time for some of our vets (namely Sammi, Dominic, Felicia).

We would like to thank Best Deal Insurance Agency (BDIA) for sponsoring the event. They provided all the great food and even the popcorn machine for the party after all the hard paddling!

New Fundraiser

In light of these difficult economic times and Wade's recommendation of starting a SD calendar, the staff has started to accept orders on 2009's SD calendar starring YOU.

What? Sneak preview you say? What the masses clamor for we MUST provide...so without much further ado, I present to you, Miss January...

Miss January: Ms. Blanca Pena

DOB: January 26th, 1988

Likes: Fishing, Coach products, Shopping on-line, E-mail & Texting, Making construction workers heads turn, and being a Super Hero.

Dislikes: Clinginess, Secretarial work, Friends who play pranks on her, Wheel of her car falling off while driving on the 91, Lechuga and her dad taking her car to the mechanic with her (friend's) adult toys in the trunk.

Miss January, Blanca Pena, will be competing in her first tournament in Tempe in March.

She was overheard saying these wise words:

"I think it is only fair to the team that I prepare myself for the 2009 Tempe Tournament in March. I want no excuses why I wasn't ready. The team will not be disappointed as I hone my skills on the boat, harden my body and do mucho cardio so I may maximize my air capacity within my young and supple....lungs. It is my goal to make a major contribution to the Space Dragons because I will become one bad a(zz) paddling latina!!"

Space Dragons, take a page out of Miss January's book. Show up consistently to practice, practice hard, eat right, do your workouts at home and get lots of rest. There will be NO EXCUSES in Tempe!!

Another Successful Yard Sale!

After Saturday's fun events (congrats again Lil Lui & Kim - 2009 Kayak ChMapions!), we gathered up again on Sunday morning @ Coach Janice's place in Redondo Beach for our 2nd Space Dragons Yard Sale!


Our 1st Yard Sale was a great success back in March - and in typical SD fashion of continual improvement - this one had even better results!

Great job to our team members who worked the event and successfully negotiated w/ some tough hagglers! Especially successful were sales of 'big ticket' items!


The proceeds from this event will directly benefit our paddlers, as we strive to keep our dues as low as possible. We've seen steady increases in prices for registrations (both tournaments + annual dues), but we try our absolute best to cover without unnecessary taxing of our folks.
