Paddler Spotlight - Deej and Devant!!

Hometown?
Deadra:
Waipahu, Hawaii
Devant:
The LBC!!

Birthday?
Deadra:
3/19
Devant:
5/27

Favorite Food(s)?
Deadra:
Macaroni salad, thin crust pizza, pancit noodles, Hawaii fried noodles, shanghai eggrolls
Devant:
I’m a major sweet toother. Gimme anything sweet and I’ll love you forever!—Nutella and Robert’s cookies are a couple favs. Cheeses are great too!

How long have you been paddling for?
Deadra:
This is my third season, but hung out 2 years before that as a groupie
Devant:
The beginning of ’08 sounds about right. Tempe '08 was my first true run at the sport.

Why do you paddle?
Deadra:
Because Ceez and Joe said so and because Ceez said I was a lazy bum…
Devant:
The people (paddlers are hot!).

Are you a better Paddler when you are Happy or Angry?
Deadra:
When I am happy….you can’t be angry paddling…everyone is in such a good mood how can you be mad? And if you are… everyone will make you smile and laugh so no point in paddling mad….
Devant:
Psh! SHOOT, it doesn't even matter! I’m a better paddler all day, everyday (but I’m pretty much happy all the time)!! =P

Favorite or notable Space Dragon moment(s)?
Deadra:
There are so many moments that made me laughed so hard that my stomach hurt and some that have brought me to tears. Someday when I am in my rocking chair thinking back…it’ll all be good memories.
Devant:
Some of many would have to be: Space Ripple Mammoth Trip '08—One word. Sardines (Thanks Jane!)!; Treasure Island '08—SD Men’s dip in the Bay and watching Ceez bruise his boys while trying to crawl back up onto the boat, boat races @ O’neill’s Pub; Portland '08—Flag catching (sometimes with one only contact lens); Tempe '09—My FIRST calling experience on the women’s boat; COL's; and honestly, watching any type of interaction between Galen and Brendan (from Ripple) makes me smile (and cringe).

How do you prepare yourself for a Race?
Deadra:
I eat! I know right? I should have good answers but truly, I will eat because I am excited. I will stay up late trying to get all of my homework in so I don’t have to worry about it over the weekend. Also, I couch potato and watch Two and a Half Men everynite (good show). I know it’s not exactly the ideal thing to do, but that’s what I do. :)
Devant:
For me? Show up on time! =P

Any hobbies, activities, interests outside of paddling?
Deadra:
I play softball, crochet, talk on Skype with my kids in Japan and I am attending school.
Devant:
Bouldering/sport climbing, mountain biking, slacklining, running, singing out-loud, chillin’, surfing, hip-hop, snowboarding, long beach, dance, playing guitar, just being outside, food, nights, massages (giving and getting). I'm pretty much good for it all (except for Jason's infamous "death marches!").

Any advice for new Paddlers?
Deadra:
Have fun! We do paddle hard and for the greater purpose of being the best, but at some point it still has to be fun. Also listen to your coaches they have the water experience that will help you get to your own paddling goals.
Devant:
Just remember that everyone on this team—at one point or another—has started out as awkward, tired, and sore as you are now. It’ll all be worth it in the end if you keep at it with an open mind and a solid attitude!

Paddling-wise, any particular goals for yourself or the team?
Deadra:
The team is on the right course. They started off slow and had to build a foundation they or we as a team are exactly fulfilling the goals that we are all gaining by every year. We have all the same goals and the same love for this team. For myself, I am exercising, having fun and spending my time with people that make me smile I need nothing more.
Devant:
Personally: in the long-term--to just be free of any and all injuries within this shoulder/bicep intensive sport, as well as possibly try-out for a Premier Mixed Nat'l team (just to see how I'd fare). Team: Have each of our Mens, Women, and Geri crews earn well-deserved spots in Div. 1A along with full, consistent team participation at land workouts.

If you could change one thing about the Team, what would it be?
Deadra:
Nothing, I extremely admire the people that run this team and give all of their time and dedication. I am in awe of the paddlers who give their weekends and time to travel to make this team. How lucky am I to be associated with a group of friends and paddlers that love this team so much. Changes? I am just happy to be part of this team.
Devant:
Who am I kidding? even if I elected to have practice start later, I'd still be late! More organized team outing events like team beer and bowling nights or paintball wars would be chill (why does everyone have to live so far away from each other? BOO!).

Favorite part about being a Space Dragon?
Deadra:
I get to be as silly or serious as I want to be when I am paddling. Also, Joe takes out the water weight from the tire when I am struggling. :)
Devant:
Simple. SD love.

You have a single brother or sister. What Space Dragon would you consider hooking them up with?
Deadra:
I don’t have a sister but if I did? Well? I would introduce her to…..Galen (he’s so sweet, right?)
Devant:
Assuming I had interested, single and looking siblings of age, they would have to be the sexiest Space Dragons around...Tran and Galen.

Most interesting character you've met through the team?
Deadra:
Phil (Animal). I never know what he’s gonna say EVER! He makes Ceez and I laugh all the time!
Oh! And Galen…..his challenges with his Sexy Dances against Ripple makes me laugh so hard.
Devant:
Our team is a team full of characters. Robert (the-guy-that-knows-everything-about-anything), Brian and Jason crack me up, KMak never ceases to surprise me with his skillz and antics (a guy that carries around a bucket to practice has got some serious pizzaz), and of course Pearl because of her sheer toughness despite the mild princess exterior (I'm sure she has Nunchucks under her bed or Bo staff skills or something like that).

Any interesting facts about yourself - or secrets that you want to divulge?
Deadra:
Hhhmmm? Nothing special. No tattoos, not pregnant, not a lesbian, Ceez says I hate everything, really spoiled by my family and Ceez and I love to shop.
Devant:
I am moderately afraid of heights (ironic because I’m a rock climber). I still also wear my retainer regularly at night and will feel strange if I don’t. Also, I'm a ninja-for-hire.

Who got you into Space dragons/Dragonboating?
Deadra:
Ceez and Joe…..I am thankful they both got my chubby booty off the couch.
Devant:
Jackie “the Gimpster” Lai brought me out. The team kept me coming back for more!

How did you meet him/her?
Deadra:
Ceez (lover, I was fine video taping and eating during tournaments)
Joe (fed-up coach, hey! I was okay fetching the food and drinks for two years)
Devant:
We’re both members of an allied clan of people known as “stone monkeys” (also known as climbers).

Any additional questions you want to answer? If you were a hot dog and you were starving, would you eat yourself? - From???

How Fit of an Airmen Are You?

Working remotely in the desert has many benefits.....so many that this is the first time (and probably the last) that I will mention one.

and that is, that they post all these wonderful things at the base gym to determine
"How Fit of an Airmen Are You?"

This got me really excited, because, not only do I get to compare myself to the general population but, I get to see how fit I am, compared to the men and women that are there to protect our country. Unfortunately, they have removed all of their charts off of their site...but never fear, I have found another source for charts.

Basically,
Fitness points are awarded in four areas: aerobic (running), body-composition, push-ups, and crunches. Ratings are split amongst age groups and genders.

I'd highly recommend looking them over and assesing your current state of fitness. After the season, see where you are then. If you are upset with your current score - Joe run's a free Personal Training session every Saturday and Sunday after practice.

What affects ~1/10 Americans?

Extrapolate that number and approximately 1 in 10 Space Dragons may eventually be affected by Diabetes. Marina was worried about you guys and wanted to help. Because she's so worried about us and her grandson, Andrew, she would like our help in raising money towards a cure. The Tour de Cure is a series of fund-raising cycling events held in 40 states nationwide to benefit the American Diabetes Association.

Here is a letter from the Ship to Shore Event Coordinator to Marina:

Dear Marina,
Yesterday we issued a challenge to raise $10,000 and get our total to $200,000 by the end of today. Well we are almost there. So remind your friends to make good on their promises by visiting
http://tour.diabetes.org/site/R?i=zFi5UNHFr6BTbglZ5B8SPA.. and making a donation in your name.
Now here is a bigger, bolder challenge. If everyone raises $150 over the course of this Memorial Weekend, we will raise a lot more than $10,000... We will raise $100,000.

Now that's a great way to honor Memorial Weekend. Whether you are at a family gathering or hanging out with friends, talk about your plan to ride across The Vincent Thomas Bridge or cycle in our Family Ride on May 31st.
Tell everyone you are part of the first bike ride in 23 years to cross these port bridges and tell them you are raising funds to fight diabetes. Ask them to sponsor you this Memorial Weekend by visiting
www.diabetes.org/tour-shiptoshore.

Also, for every purchase you make at JAX Bicycles between now and the end of June, Jax Bicycles will donate 10% to Tour de Cure. So visit
http://tour.diabetes.org/site/R?i=E405wSV7yZdwkiKqwgha8Q.., find a store near you and tell them you are a Tour de Cure rider.

REMEMBER - ASK EVERYONE YOU KNOW TO SPONSOR YOU THIS WEEKEND.

If you guys want, they are still registering riders...

Have a great Memorial Day Weekend all!

Worried about Vancouver?

Can't sleep at night because you have a few questions about Vancouver?

A few questions like...

Whose gonna take care of the Space Dragons while in a different country?

Who are the lucky Canadians that get to experience SD Love?

Are there any single Canucks (as in Canadian citizen not as in the hockey team) that might be interested in some single Yankees (as in US citizen not as in the baseball team)?

Well don't you worry! Because before the tourny, Joe says "No!"

But during the tourny (and afterwards) we will have the privilege to be hosted by Phat Phish Racing.

Unfortunately, my google stalking skillz have failed me and I did not find much about them...

EXCEPT that they made it to the Sports Illustrated Vault with this video:

Congrats Phat Phish Racing and look forward to meeting you all.

Be the (Wo)Man of the House

In keeping with the basketball theme, here is an interesting clip from arguably one of the best centers to play the game.(and subesquently, the player whom I model my game after - except Im not 7'1", so I shoot like he shoots free throws)

Yep that is Shaq fighting with himself over whether or not he should have that doughnut. I bet, in his mind it went something like this:

Mind: I'm on Weight Watchers, I'll probably blow all of my daily points with just one bite.
Stomach: This baby has one point and one point only, and that is tasting good.
Mind: Garrrrh!
Stomach: Bubble! bubble! burp! burp!
Mind: This is MY HOUSE! (then goes all Under Armor on the Stomach)

See? His mind triumphed and the doughnut was put in it's place. Keep it up you Biggest Losers and Closet Biggest Losers! Be the (wo)man of your house. Make sure it is you who controlls what you want to eat.

Paragon Point results

This weekend, our friends up north and the college teams had a one-day tourney @ Paragon Pt. Here are the results. Looks like they had some great, tight racing & some fun competition!

Here is a video found online of the Mixed A finish.

In the Mixed A final, .17 seconds separated 1st and 2nd, .3 seconds separated 1st and 4th, .06 seconds between 3rd and 4th. Wow - that must have been a very fun race. Take this into account along with our own very tight races (most recently the dual .29 second deltas @ Baby LB), and you begin to understand that DB is often a sport of inches & feet.

So lets continue to train hard, both on the water @ practice and off.
Practice & hard work is the only currency for continuing to earn the right to enjoy these tight, 'last-race-of-the-day' type races - and if we are fortunate - maybe find ourselves on the nice end of neck-and-neck races against equally-motivated and deserving competitors.

We want to make sure that we do all the big & little things right: getting a perfect start off the line, having synchronous timing right from the beginning, enduring a strong settle burn, minimizing excessive body weight shifting, having that consistent one extra inch of reach via rotation, and picking up the pace for a surging finish.

The only way we can work on that is through practice and hard work.

5 weeks until Vancouver!

Congrats to our friends @ Ripple Effect, UCLA, and all the other teams for what looked like awesome racing. See you all in Vancouver/Big LB/SF!

Baby Long Beach Recap

The stage was set and the bar had been raised. Having come off of an impressive and fruitful appearance last March in Tempe, AZ.--the Mighty Space Dragons crashed the party yet again in righteous fashion, this time off the fabled home waters at Marine Stadium to square off against the local teams in and around SoCal. The prize? Local bragging rights, much deserved validation, and straight up Aretha-style props with a side of R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

The Space Dragons assembled bright and early to an airy, perfect mid-70's day. Delicious food, smiles, and the infamous SD fist (mascot?) were all brought forth as Tran--our ravishing, drum-humping captain/caller--cited numerous attempts to stop certain individuals from eating too much before the races (see Mr. February for more details).

After a brief period mixed between breakfast "snacks", Jackie's bumfoot signing, and sunblock application, it was 9:30 and the time had finally come and Space Dragons RED took the water.

(note: Tran's triceps and Emily's delts from effective land workouts!)

Proving yet again that "there are no flukes in dragon boating" SD Red showed how straight-up hard work, poise, and commitment can yield amazing non-fluke type results with impressive 1st place finishes in both mixed heats leading up to the final 500m heat, ending in a stellar 2nd place finish to get the Silver. What's more, is the wicked 1st place bling-bling win in the 200m finals! Such highlights can only be appreciated however, when considering the all over high- level of competition we faced in teams such as the raging Electric Dragons; sizzling LA Thunder Dragons; and of course those beloved in-laws, mighty team LARD (just to name a few). We're right where we need to be when it comes to growing and getting better; let's keep it rolling on harder, faster, and stronger as we move into bigger challenges in Alcan, Big LB, and SF!

As the mighty Space Dragons finds its way to more continual growth as a one team, SD Blue has been a testament to
our growth as a team. These studs and vixens pulled out some awesome sets and in fact, didn't look newbie-esque at all despite our many first-time paddlers! Highlighted by sweeping 2nd place finishes in the 500m and 200m qualifying rounds, the victory here is in the great amount of poise, grit, and determination you all had when marshalling out to the line to carry out some crazy FAST and FURIOUS starts (as experienced and felt by yours truly on the drum!). This humble SD writer bears no grievance when he says that he is truly proud of the terrific work you all put in on (and off) the water leading to on a job well done! Let's continue on in carrying that fun (but competitive) SD spirit into bigger things!!

"Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant."
-R.L. Stevenson

Much thanks and love to:
  • Dr. Chen, the association, & all the volunteers that made the race happen!
  • Jason, Tran, Denise, and others who got in early to coordinate site set-up!
  • Ceez for coordinating equipment (ANIMAL!)!
  • Equipment providers (todos ustedes!) for providing!
  • Food and drink providers (even the unhealthy food)! =P
  • Pearl for handling waivers, registration, and pimping race fees from participants!
  • George, Blanca, and all other paparazzi pirates with cameras!
  • AJ, Sammi, James, Emily, Joe, and Marty keeping everyone afloat with some righteous steering!
  • Mommies for being our mommies!
  • Tran, Denise, Wade, Devant, and Emily for your voices from the bow!
  • Janet for the massage!
  • Galen for the mother's day flowers & being sexy!
  • EVERYONE for doing what you do to represent SD and make the team what it is!
Special shout-out to 1st time SD paddlers!!: Rico "Suave", Vernon, Garret, Joanne, Michelle, Eileen, Susan, Stephanie, and Kathy! You rock!!

I know what you're thinking..."What REEEEAALY went down last Sunday?" If you must know, here are some notable highlights you might consider asking your fellow bench-mate in bold about the next time you see him/her. Just a hint for those who might consider falling asleep around our fellow Space Dragons...the next time you fall asleep, consider that blue toe nails aren't the only thing that can happen to you!

1. Joe almost missing the boat (TWICE!)
2. Kim actually missing the boat (Super Dwayne hopped in for the rescue!)!!
3. Robert's port-o-potty ordeal (HILARIOUS!)
4. Pearl's dunking by Galen
5. AJ getting "sucked" by Wade (find out where!)

Pain? Bring it on!

Yo, yo, yo, whassup, whassup? It's time to get busy! This Saturday is the debut of THE Land Workout - the Space Dragon Circuit Course.

What's all this rukus about? [I have lovingly called it the SD 300 workout. Why the 300 workout? Well in the movie actors went through a rigorous workout regimen to get the ridiculous Spartan body. Their workout was designed to be run only 1x or 2x and no more. The workout dictates and allotment of reps and measures how fast you can complete it. It's a brutal workout, starting out strong and slowing down, finishing at a crawl. Sounds a lot like the pain that Joe and the Rodimous wants to put us through!]

The details as per Coach Joe:

We'll be running 4 people at a time and writing down your time. Each person going thru the course will have a partner to help motivate, count, and direct you to the next task (we HIGHLY encourage everyone to PARTICIPATE and CHEER each other on). Remember, this is to help gauge your progress thru the season; we'll have maybe one time trail before Big LB and then one before SF. During the season we'll create "mini circuit courses" to not only help you with the next time trial but for overall fitness. Again, to emphasize, we ENCOURAGE everyone to participate but this is optional.

Attached is the course layout in case you did not do the walk thru (and Yes, I'm having problems looking at it through the Northrop network).

So let's kick this stuff, and get ready to knock the sand off your pants, yeah!

May 5, 2009

The 5th of May

Happy Cinco De Mayo!

No official Wednesday practice tomorrow!
For those that have the itch to get some paddling in, Coach John will host a "Just Paddle" session. Please be there by 6pm!

Enjoy the results of this past weekend guys - but know that the season is still young!
Recharge and get ready for a 6 week sprint to Alcan.
Vancouver - watch out cuz the Space Dragons are coming!

THIS MESSAGE BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE BK BREWERY

Baby Long Beach!

Check back again later for a full recap from Devant-o-matic!

The Space Dragons gathered at Marine Stadium with the rest of the local DB community for some great racing at the Baby Long Beach tournament yesterday.

Both crews (Red + Blue) did great!
Blue earned 2nd place in all 4 of their heats, losing only to heavy weights LARD Black & KG Gold. Awesome job, esp to all of our enthusiastic & talented new paddlers!
Red qualified for both the 500m & 200m finals, taking home 1st place in the 200m & 2nd place in the 500m. Both finals races were highlighted w/ great, neck-and-neck races w/ our friends (& in-laws!) @ LARD Black (.29 seconds was the difference in both races!). Fun times!

Race results available here.

Thanks all for a fun Sunday!
The ride only gets more fun (& intense) from here.
Vancouver & Big LB are on the horizon!

MS. MAY

JANET

Ms. May: Janet

Likes: Traveling, planning events, volleyball, sleeping, wobbly pop, meat, éclairs, chocolate, dancing wildly on bars, breaking boys hearts, good looking boys who are rich AND funny AND have a nice car.

Dislikes: Snorers, work, 10Ks, 5Ks, running, walking, kissing girls not named Emily, hairy boys, boys who are shorter than her, boys who weigh less than her, boys who do not have “high-earning-potential” or earn less than her, boys who finished their undergrad at a good school in greater than 4 years.

Relationship Status: SINGLE!!! Go get her boys…just remember her likes and dislikes…

If you think you are a match for Ms. May, you can meet her at Baby Long Beach Tournament on May 3rd. She even promised she'll wear something nice for you...
